CHAPTER EIGHT
LENORE parked her car in the underground car park beneath the building that housed the Royal Theatre. By seven-twenty on a Saturday night all levels were filling rapidly but she managed to find a spot. She kept repeating the âyellowâ colour-code of the level in the lift afterwards to imprint it on her mind. The last time sheâd parked down there, sheâd been distracted and forgotten what level she was parked on and it had taken her nearly an hour to find her car.
The lift doors shot open and she joined the passers-by in the curving arcade that went in all directions, one of them to the Theatre Royal. Anyone not knowing where they were heading could easily get lost, she thought, but sheâd been to the Royal more times than she could count. Sheâd even performed there a few times, though only in minor parts.
Most of her acting career had been relegated to minor roles so far. Not because she wasnât a good actress, she believed, but because she didnât curry favour with the right people. Acting was the same as any other showbiz industry. You had to be part of the âinâ crowd to succeed. If you were âinâ you were at the head of the table, given first choice of anything on offer. Everyone else scrambled for the crumbs.
Sleeping with the right people might have helped, she supposed. But that just wasnât her style. Which was ironic, really. Sheâd slept with Australiaâs rising star of a playwright for years and it hadnât earned her a single decent role. But that had been deliberate sabotage on Nathanâs part, in her opinion. Heâd always said she wasnât suited to the women he created, but she knew heâd hated her not being home at night when and if he decided he needed her body.
God, but that man was a selfish chauvinist of the first order! She must enlighten Gemma of his true nature before it was too late.
Lenore gave herself a mental shake, astonished that she could be thinking of anyone other than Zachary at this point in time. But maybe sheâd been deliberately diverting her mind from him in an effort to keep her emotions under control tonight. Right from the moment sheâd dropped the girls off at Belleview sheâd been fighting herself and the inevitable excitement growing within her.
When sheâd arrived home, sheâd been positively useless for a while, pacing mindlessly through the various rooms, unable to eat, unable even to think about what she would wear. Several times sheâd contemplated ringing Zachary and telling him she had changed her mind. It would be the right thing to do.
Lenore knew that she wasnât as strong as Zachary. Normally. But from what sheâd witnessed that afternoon, he was going through a stage where he wasnât so strong either. Maybe Felicity was neglecting him sexually. Maybe she was just neglecting him all round. Heâd sounded resigned to her going off at all hours to be with her sister. Maybe the marriage was in trouble at long last.
